Eastern Sicilian Tour: Taormina, Syracuse and much more
Like Western Sicily, the tour of Eastern Sicily is always a full of unique experiences, with breathtaking views that you can admire from Taormina and Etna, the Baroque charm of Val di Noto and the cultural and historical sights of Syracuse.
But a real tour of Eastern Sicily can certainly not forget about the sites of Montalbano: you will dedicate more than a day to the discovery of Ragusa, Modica and Scicli, towns immersed in a timeless atmosphere and unique gastronomic heritage
Tour of East Sicily: the program
Day 1: Taormina
Arrival at Catania airport, transfer to hotel in direction of Taormina or Giardini Naxos. Accommodation in hotel and lunch.
In the afternoon guided visit of Taormina, city famous for its Greek-Roman Theatre, monument well kept , where there is one of the most beautiful panorama of the island.
During the walk along the characteristic little streets of the city, it will admire Corvaja Place, St Pancrazio Church, Odeon, small building of Imperial age and the St Agostino ex Church in Gothic style.
Passed Porta di Mezzo it will see Ciampoli Palace and Duomo that kept valuable paintings.
Finally it will meet St. Steven Dukes’ Palace, interesting example of the end of three hundred building.
Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
Day 2: Etna and Siracusa
A tour of Eastern Sicily that does not include at least an excursion on Etna and a visit to the beautiful city of Syracuse is not worthy of being defined as such.
That’s why we at Discovering Sicily decided to dedicate a whole day to discovering these two sites in South-East Sicily.
Breakfast in hotel and departure for the Etna excursion, the active higher volcano in all the Europe. With its eruptive activity Etna volcano has created lavic pinnacles with particular shapes, surrounded by a various vegetation, typical only of Etna such as: the perfumed brooms, birches, chestnut woods.
You will go up to 1,900 meters above sea level, to one of the most representative nature trails in the park, which summarizes in a pleasant and easy itinerary the most vulcanological and vegetational aspects of the area.
Continue with the guided tour of Siracusa.
It will see the archaeological area where there are: Latomies, Dyonisius’ Ear and the Greek theatre, the maximum monument of theatrical architecture of the time.
Check in at hotel in Syracuse, dinner and overnight.
Day 3: Noto and Ragusa
Breakfast at the hotel and departure for the visit of Noto, a city full of charm that earned the title of “stone garden”.
The itinerary begins with the visit of the Cathedral overlooking the town hall square, where the municipal palace and the bishop’s palace are also located.
The visit continue with the Church of San Francesco and the convent of the Most Holy Savior, with the monumental tower. Continue for a visit to Ragusa. You start from the historic center with Piazza S. Giovanni, where you will admire the splendid cathedral, sumptuous eighteenth-century building.
It will then pass in front of Palazzo Bertini, singular for the grotesque masks depicting the 3 powerful. Continue for Ragusa Ibla and visit the famous Duomo of St. George, the work of the architect Rosario Gagliardi, is considered among the 100 most beautiful churches in Italy for the suggestive divergent position compared to the main line of the square.
Walk to admire Palazzo La Rocca, the splendid balconies and Palazzo Donnafugata.

Day 4: Scicli and Modica
Our trip to Eastern Sicily ends with the visit of two beautiful Baroque cities in the heart of the province of Ragusa, the frame where the fortunate fiction of the Commissioner Montalbano was filmed.
Breakfast at the hotel, departure for the visit of Scicli.
Its reconstruction after the earthquake of 1693 gave the city an elegant and monumental image, resulting in a concentration of representative buildings along with a variety of styles: from the late baroque to the architectures of the eighteenth and twentieth centuries.
The Palaces and Churches of Via Mormino Penna are the best baroque expression Sicilian. Among them are Beneventano Palace, the facades of the Churches of St. John Evangelist, Saint Michael, and Santa Teresa.
You will continue with the visit of Modica, masterpiece of the baroque ibleo: the magnificent S.Giorgio Church, set in scenic position, whose beautiful facade is enriched by an imposing staircase of 250 steps. You will admire the splendid balconies in the baroque style of noble buildings such as the Palazzo Polara and Palazzo Napoletano. The visit continue with the Church of St. Peter, late-baroque.
Short stop at a lab that produces the famous modican chocolate, which still follows the ancient Aztec’s method.
Transfer to Catania or Comiso airport to return home.
